Funny how life is on soap operas. Michelle Stafford left CBS' 'The Young and the Restless' last year with her long-time character, Phyllis Summers, in a coma. Now, the redhead actress returns to daytime TV on 'General Hospital' playing -- what else? -- comatose, Nina Clay. Oh, the irony.

Stafford was rumoured to be joining the cast of ABC's top soap, but it wasn't confirmed until Thursday's episode when Stafford's Nina, the presumed dead wife of Silas (Michael Easton), popped up at the end of the show.
Daytime Confidential called the surprise "the casting coup of the decade!" 'GH' headwriter Ron Carlivati told the mag that executive producer Frank Valentini snuck Stafford on set to tape the scene in secret, so that fans would be blindsided.
"We've been sweating it out ever since that it would stay under wraps!” Carlivati said.
Stafford's role connects her to several already well-established 'GH' characters, like her mom Madeline Reeves (Donna Mills). She's also the sister/cousin (which one is it?!) of Detective Nathan West (Ryan Paevey) and has a sworn enemy in Ava Jerome (Maura West).
Stafford played Phyllis, a fan favorite, on 'Y&R' off and on since 1994. The role garnered her two Daytime Emmy Awards, and, now with her recent casting news, it looks like Stafford won't be returning to Genoa City anytime soon.

Since she left the number one soap, Stafford starred in her own web series, 'The Stafford Project,' which was loosely based on her life as an actress and single mother. Her other TV credits include 'Pacific Palisades' and 'Diagnosis Murder.' She's also popped up on 'Frasier' and 'Charmed.'
