After last week’s very classy departure of Hollie Cavanagh, the American Idol stage is left with only three remaining contestants. Tonight the Idol hopefuls will battle it out to see who will make it to the finale next week.
Unlike previous weeks, tonight’s episode of American Idol will not have a theme in place, but instead, the judges and Jimmy Iovine will be picking the songs of their choice for the contestants. This could either go terribly wrong or incredibly well, depending on the selections.
When it comes to Jessica Sanchez, you can be guaranteed that Jimmy Iovine is going to choose a more contemporary song for her to sing, having criticized her relentlessly about her old fashioned choices throughout the competition. This should be interesting since, in theory anyway, it should represent more of the type of music she would be recording for her CD. The judges, on the other hand, are likely to pick a less imaginative choice such as Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, or any one of the power ballad singers.
The judges have their hands full when it comes to Phillip Phililips, because it seems that no matter what song he sings, he tends to sing it in the same style week after week (I refuse to say that he “Phillip-Phillips” it, but you know what I mean). This is both a good and a bad thing since it has worked for him and typically sounds pretty good. Finding himself in the bottom three for the first time, however, may be an indicator that American Idol viewers are ready for something new out of Phillip. Your guess is as good as mine, but with his willingness to tackle anything, I think Phillip will come out just fine.
One contestant who, it seems, can sing almost anything and make it into a powerful performance is Joshua Ledet. Older Luther Vandross or Joe Cocker type selections seem likely for this contestant who has knocked similar choices out of the park earlier in the season. The problem Joshua may run into is his limited familiarity with many of the songs the judges and Jimmy are likely to select. Should he be tasked with having to learn a completely new song this week, we could see stressed out Joshua return, which in turn, could affect his performance.
Once the Idol hopefuls have sung all the selections chosen for them, they have the opportunity to sing a song of their choice. This allows the contestants to pick a song they are comfortable with and that they feel truly showcases their talent. This is always a fun part of the competition because we get to see the final three truly in their element, which, in Joshua’s case, is certain to include choir singers.
Watch the final three fight for the final 2 tonight at 8/7c on Fox.
