Sons of Anarchy has a new villain, and it's Harold Perrineau. It was announced on Friday that the former LOST actor had been cast in FX's biker drama as the big bad guy for the show's upcoming fifth season. And, for those of you who are wondering, yes, Perrineau will once again play a father with a missing child. Well, sort of.
Perrineau has been cast as Damon Pope, an Oakland gangster who TV Guide is describing as "ruthless." So what's Pope's beef with SAMCRO? Well, remember the girl that Tig ran down in the season 4 finale? Turns out, that was Pope's daughter. So instead of bereaved cries of "My boooooooy," we might just get a few "My giiiiiiirl"s instead.
"I wanted to set up something in terms of tension for when Jax takes over at the head of this club," Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter told TV Guide regarding the introduction of Perrineau's character. "We'll begin with some sense of immediacy and some kind of threat." Pope "will definitely have a strong point of view about what they did to his daughter."
Sons of Anarchy won't be Harold Perrineau's first rodeo. The actor, who has appeared in films such as The Matrix Reloaded and 28 Weeks Later, starred on LOST as Michael Dawson, a character who spent much of the series searching for his son, Walt. Prior to LOST, Perrineau starred as protagonist Augustus Hill in HBO's prison drama Oz.
Perrineau will join actor Jimmy Smits as a newcomer to Sons of Anarchy's fifth season. Smits will portray Neron "Nero" Padilla, a Latino gangster who becomes a dangerous mentor for Jax, who recently became the president of SAMCRO.
Sons of Anarchy's fifth season is slated to premiere this fall. The series has already been renewed for a sixth season.
