Syfy Cancels Sanctuary After Four Seasons

Sanctuary cast

Canadian produced sci-fi/fantasy series Sanctuary has quietly been a mainstay of Syfy's original programming lineup since its debut in October 2008. Its one of those shows that kind of flys under the radar of the TV world, but has still earned a passionate cult fanbase. That of course being something that science fiction programming does like no other genre.

This announcement has been rumored for some time. After all, the season four (and now series) finale aired way back in December of 2011. It's very unusual for a network to put off making an announcement about a show's fate for that long, unless they're simply putting off dropping the axe. Sadly for fans, that has turned out to be the case.

For those unaware, Sanctuary followed lead character Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and her team as they search for super powered creatures or people, known as "Abnormals". The team attempts to both help and study the friendlier subjects, but must also capture and contain the dangerous Abnormals within the titular sanctuary.

Mark Stern, President of Syfy's original programming department had this to say - "We’re honored to have been part of this incredible series. In addition to garnering unmatched devotion by fans worldwide, 'Sanctuary' was a bona fide trailblazer, setting new standards with its highly innovative production techniques -- including pioneering green screen and RED camera technology -- and Emmy-nominated visual effects. It's been an amazing ride and we look forward to our next project with Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood and Damian Kindler."

Star Amanda Tapping, series creator Damian Kindler, and executive producer Martin Wood issued this joint statement to Sanctuary's fans - "We couldn’t be prouder of the four seasons we made on Sanctuary… We are very grateful for the opportunity and must acknowledge the wonderful work from our cast and crew, the support from our studio, the Beedie Group–who have been with us right from the start, the networks who worked so hard with us each week, and most of all the fans … we owe so much to the fans.”

Will you miss Sanctuary? Did Syfy make the right call?

I'm sad that Sanctuary has come to an end, because I love Amanda Tapping. And I love her because of the Stargate series, first SG-1 and especially Atlantis. Yes. I know, she was only there for season 4, but I think Atlantis was the best of them all. I liked Sanctuary. It was different...all the characters should be proud of their work. It will definitely be missed. As mentioned by others, the newer shows are awful. I loved Eureka and still like Warehouse 13, but the rest, I can do without. I think Syfy is doing a great disservice to the fans, BIG TIME. Mainly because you don't listen to us! This is a sad time for sci fi!

The people who run the SyFy network don't understand science-fiction. They wouldn't make the decisions they do, if they did.

It saddens me that another great sci-fi programme is going to be canned. There's already too few of them out there to enjoy. We may get the late seasons here in South Africa, but still it was something to look forward to. I can't stand alot of the reality shows out there. I don't give a hoot about all the superficial crap of celebrity lives. It's mindless nonsense that numbs the senses. I agree I wish they'd bring back all the good stuff: Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Star Trek and one of the best ones yet ... Firefly!!

Yes, i feel that this show should end now as the season 3 and 4 are much more weaker then season 1 and 2. The show lost its momentum and it seems that it couldn't got any better in future too. Their first mistake (only in my opinion) is when they ended up the character of Ashley Magnus. Anyways, the show was good, just not good enough to be continued for another season.
