The Walking Dead Releases First Look at Michonne

Filming for The Walking Dead's third season only commenced a few days ago, and already some pretty awesome pictures are starting to surface. While we haven't gotten a full look at much from season 3 (though this behind-the-scenes video did reveal a little of the grimy interior of the new prison setting), we did get a major reveal on Wednesday, when Entertainment Weekly revealed the first photograph of new character Michonne. Here she is, in all her katana-weilding glory:

This is our first glimpse of new character Michonne since her brief appearance in "Beside the Dying Fire," the show's second season finale. There, Michonne appeared briefly to save Andrea's (Laurie Holden) life, though the cloak she was wearing left her face shrouded in shadow. It was revealed on the following episode of Talking Dead that the role would be played in season 3 by Treme actress Danai Gurira.

“We looked at a lot of talented people that were really fantastic, but. . . we felt like we had found the essence of this fictional character that just randomly appeared in another person, and that person was Danai Gurira," creator Robert Kirkman told EW. "She kind of came in and really just blew us all away. She’s got incredible presence, and she’s got a theater background, and is very physical, and was just perfect for the role.”

Kirkman promises "little tweaks and differences" between the onscreen Michonne and her comic counterpart, and that television viewers will "get to know her a lot faster than comic book readers did.”

You know what else I wish would happen faster? The long wait we've got until season 3. The Walking Dead will return for its third season in October. It's getting more and more difficult to wait.
