The highly confusing, what-the-hell-is-going-on show of the year is being renewed for a second season, according to Deadline. The pilot of The Leftovers drew around 1.8m viewers and kept a generally steady flow since, my guess would be HBO has renewed it because even they're scratching their heads. It's not quite LOST standards, but it is still pretty damn weird. Mystery is great but only if accompanied by a satisfying resolution.
And with the white-wearing, chain-smoking, memorial-disturbing mutes, that mysteriously plague every episode, I'm not sure exactly how long HBO will keep their cool, until they finally decide the writers might just be taking the piss.
Watching The Leftovers, I'm still quite baffled, though immensely pleased, that LOST actually managed to last its six season story and didn't get cancelled, that is some feat that I don't think many shows in the current age will master.
In the end, I really hope the 2% that disappeared don't end up in some purgatory that we find out about through flashbacks then flash sideways and flash forwards... you get the point. I'm sceptical because it is one of the creators of Lost (Jeffrey Lieber) who brings us The Leftovers and I'm all for the environment but I really hope he doesn't start recycling.
