Gino D'Acampo Discusses 'Italian Escapes' Series 2

Just the other week I had the pleasure of catching up with Gino D'Acampo, Italian chef turned TV star, who is about to embark on his second series of 'Italian Escapes' for itv. The show aired its first series in September 2013, as Gino headed to Rome, Naples, Puglia, Campania and the Almalfi Coast. The show will return in September 2014, with Gino heading around Northern Italy this time round.

Gino's Italian Escape Series 2With a second series of 'Italian Escape' on the way, where is your favourite location that you have filmed in?
Naples, my home town, is where we started the journey in the first series and, naturally, I love the place. But in the new series, I visited fabulous places like Florence and Venice.  How could anyone possibly choose just one favourite?

Is Naples one of your favourites then?

The whole Amalfi coast is magical.

In the second series do you revisit any of the locations you previously visited in the first series?

No, the locations in this series are in the north - which, this being Italy, are all gorgeous, sunny and wonderful.

After filming an episode there in the first series, did you get to spend any time at home in Naples in between filming episodes of the second series?

No, and my mother's still annoyed about it! Location filming is very time-consuming and there just wasn't the opportunity on this occasion.

Are there any other countries you would like to film a similar type of show in?

I think the USA would be a great location for us and there are several European countries that would work really well.

Would you do a similar sort of show around the UK?

Why not? Living here as I do, I've travelled to many areas and tasted all kinds of great food.  If the series can include the Guinness brewery in Dublin, I'm your man - to be sure!

What's your favourite food?

Pasta!  I love it so much, I've even started a chain of Pasta Bars . We currently have three open in London with another two on the way.

Are you more of a sweet or savoury type of guy?

Savoury on the whole, I think.  Then again, I wouldn't say no to a Kinder Egg ...

Gino's Italian Escape Series 2 - 2You also present 'Let's Do Lunch' with the lovely Mel Sykes. Who has been your favourite guest?

That's not fair! I must say it's always madness when Keith Lemon drops in, though ...

Who would you like to appear on the show?

I think Johnny Depp would be pretty good value.

How much pressure do you feel cooking on live television?

None, really.  I'm very lucky inasmuch as I'm able to be myself and act naturally, as though I were having fun with a bunch of friends  -  which I hope I am!

Has it ever gone horribly wrong?

Nothing major  -  although now I've said that, it's bound to happen ...

You have broken a number of world records on the show. If you could hold any world record title what would it be and why?

Most Orgasms In A Year By A Centenarian.

Are you planning to attempt to break any more records?

That last one, I hope.

The second series of 'Gino's Italian Escape' begins on September 5th 2014 at 8pm on itv. In the opening episode, he heads to the city of Florence.

'Let's Do Lunch With Gino & Mel' recently ended it's fourth series, with a fifth series expected to air in December.
