We have some sad news to report today, as two-time Emmy winning actress Kathryn Joosten passed away this morning after a long battle with lung cancer, surrounded by family and friends. Joosten was best known to TV fans as the quite "colorful" Wisteria Lane resident Karen McCluskey on the ABC hit dramedy Desperate Housewives. Oddly enough, Joosten's character also passed away in the series finale of DH, which aired last month.
Joosten's second best remembered role was as President Bartlet's den mother like executive secretary Dolores Landingham on multi-Emmy winning drama The West Wing. Her character also met a tragic end on that show, dying in a car accident in the second season.
Joosten began acting at a relatively late age. Her film debut didn't happen until 1984, when she was already north of the big 4-0. It then took her until 1995 to make the move out to Hollywood and start doing it full time. Prior to that, she had been working successfully as a psychiatric nurse, before deciding to pursue her Hollywood dreams.
Along the way she's racked up over 100 credits in both film and television, and to list them all here would require several more paragraphs. That said, here are a few of the more notable entries on her vast resume:
Family Matters, Picket Fences, 3rd Rock From The Sun, ER, Roseanne, Murphy Brown, Seinfeld, Frasier, NYPD Blue, Home Improvement, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Hellraiser: Inferno (Yes, Really), Ally McBeal, Dharma & Greg, Spin City, The X-Files, Titus, General Hospital, The Drew Carey Show, Charmed, The King Of Queens, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Joan Of Arcadia, Grey's Anatomy, Wedding Crashers, Malcolm In The Middle, Monk, Scrubs, The Cleveland Show
Phew, and that's only about a fourth of them. That's quite the amazing career.
R.I.P. Kathryn Joosten, 1939-2012
