David Boreanaz Tweets Cryptic Messages About The Future Of Bones, Series Creator Hart Hanson Responds

Former Angel and current Bones star David Boreanaz went on Twitter the other day to make mention of the show's upcoming appearance at Comic-Con 2012, and promptly freaked out fans of the show with a rather cryptic series of messages.

First tweet - "SDCC 2012 shld be a blast and quite possibly the last for #Bones ? Farewell tour? Look forward to seeing everyone there." Farewell tour? What?

Second tweet - "Let's put this in sports terms. I'm a free agent after this season. So the Bones fair well tour is in full-swing.". Free agent? His contract is running out?

Third tweet - "You must always keep your options open and ready for New challenges. The fear is the unknown and that's exciting." Yep, definitely sounds like he's leaving the show.

These tweets quite understandably worried fans of the veteran FOX drama, as there is really no feasible way to continue the show without one half of the Bones-Booth duo. Anonymous sources at FOX claimed that the show's future after season eight hasn't even been discussed yet, and there were no current plans to end the series. Last night, series creator Hart Hanson finally responded directly to Boreanaz's comments -

"We are in no way planning for [season 8] to be the last season. I mean anything can happen in a complicated world, but we’re very, very confident in having at least a season 9, and I can see as far as season 10 before my eyes get misty."

On whether Boreanaz might just be angling to start negotiations for a new contract early, Hanson said this - "If he is, then man, hats off to him. I would like him to consult with my agents next time if he’s thinking that far in advance. :laughs: Really, I think more likely he’s just playing around…. If you cross Tom Sawyer with Ferris Bueller, you get David Boreanaz. He loves a brouhaha. That should be his middle name. But I don’t think, even for him, he meant to cause this brouhaha. All his incendiary tweets, :laughs: have an element of truth to them. It’s never out of nowhere. It’s always connected to something, and his deal is up at the end of season 8, so it’s like, ‘Hey, how much do you love me?’ It’s possible. But again, that’s awfully far in advance."

When asked if he believes Boreanaz is simply dissatisfied with working on the series, Hanson seemed confident that he wasn't - "I believe he is certainly hoping for season 9. I don’t think he’s getting tired of it. I think he’ll probably want a little more money when he next has a chance, but that’s completely par for the course. That’s just the way things go. I know him well enough after all these years. He’s just having some fun."

Bones herself, Emily Deschanel, has yet to make any public comment either way. Her contract is also up after season eight.
