Katharine McPhee won't be the only American Idol alum in the cast of NBC's musical drama Smash for much longer, as Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson has signed on to do multiple episodes of the hit show's upcoming second season.
Hudson will play Veronica Moore, a Tony Award winning Broadway star whose prescence greatly affects the lives of series regulars Karen (the aforementioned McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilly). Hudson will undoubtedly get many chances to wow us with both her singing and acting abilities before her tenure on the series is through. Let's just hope she doesn't upstage her colleagues too much.
NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt had the following to say about Hudson coming on board - "This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer Hudson. Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.”
Steven Spielberg (one of Smash's many executive producers) also seems to be ecstatic about the news - "First Dreamgirls, now Smash. I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC."
Smash is set to return to NBC airwaves in early 2013. With the new season will come a new showrunner as well, and presumably a new creative direction along with them. Whether this change makes the show better or worse is something only audiences will be able to answer.
Do you think Jennifer Hudson will be a great fit for the world of Smash? Or will she overshadow the show's regular cast?
