NBC comedy behemoth The Office is limping toward its ninth season. Having lost about three million viewers last season after the departure of Steve Carrell, things aren't looking to great for the new year. Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) is planning on packing up his bags and heading to the spinoff series The Farm, while stars John Krasinski and Ed Helms will be appearing in less episodes to film movies. B.J. Novak will be appearing in less episodes as well. But as it turns out, we'll be seeing a little more of Mindy Kaling than we expected.
The actress, who plays chatterbox customer sales representative Kelly Kapoor, is headed to FOX to start her own series: The Mindy Project, which is slated to premiere this fall (we've seen the pilot episode, and it packs quite a few laughs). For those of us who thought this would mean an unceremonious departure for Ms. Kapoor, though, at least we were proven wrong. Kaling will be back for The Office's ninth season for at least two episodes, Vulture is reporting.
Of course, Vulture also brings up a good point: will those two episodes serve as a send-off for Kelly, or will they just relegate her to the background, to be a non-presence in The Office until the show's (almost impending, it feels like) series finale?
We'll keep you posted on any Office/Mindy Project news that develops.
The Office season 9 is slated to begin on NBC September 20, while The Mindy Project will air its pilot episode September 25 on FOX.
