Ricky Gervais likes staying busy, doesn't he? The British actor and comedian is not only heading up two currently running shows (Life's Too Short and An Idiot Abroad), but two upcoming ones (Derek and Afterlife), and has just announced that he will be heading up a new interactive web series titled 'Learn English with Ricky Gervais.'
He announced the project on his blog Tuesday, and while not much is know about the webseries, Gervais shared that he had just finished editing the pilot episode, and that he hoped to have it subtitled in as many languages as possible. No one's really sure what the premise of the series is (other than Ricky), but we do know that it will star his friend and frequent collaborator Karl Pilkington.
Pilkington is the star of An Idiot Abroad and one of the three main characters of the recently ended animated series The Ricky Gervais Show. He also appears as an actor in Gervais's new series Derek. He's often a subject of playful derision by Gervais, who ridicules Karl's strange and sometimes illogical thoughts. Sometimes, though, he just enjoys dressing Karl up like a lion, as witnessed in this first still from Learn English.
No release date has yet been set for Learn English, but Gervais did have this to share about the webseries' release: "I'm going to put out the first one free as a taster then work out the best way to distribute. Might charge a small fee or get it sponsored. Unlike the audio podcasts this actually costs quite a bit to make, but even if we charge it will still only be a couple of quid."
He also mentioned making the webseries interactive, which would involve people putting their own subtitles on the series and reposting it. Apparently these subtitles will be a major part of the series' comedy, but there's no word yet on what exact role they will play.
We'll keep you posted on any new updates from Learn English as they become available.
