Adult cartoons are the rage. It seems that “The Simpsons” will come to an end after decades on air, and everyone is looking for the next show to carry its legacy. Today, Vulture reports that Russell Brand is looking to joins the ranks of “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Allen Gregory” in the new cartoon category.
Mr. Katy Perry is known overseas for his vulgar, no limits humor, while Americans know him best as Aldous Snow from “Get Him to the Greek” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” The comedian is set to team up with Sarah Silverman Program’s Dan Fybel and Rich Rinaldi to make a script for the yet untitled show. This is the same team responsible for the failed “Bob’s Burgers.”
Rumor has it that Brand was spotted meeting with “New Girl’s” production team Chernin Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV to produce the show. Though no one knows what the subject of the show will be, no network is currently attached to the program as well. However, it’s likely that Fox will have the first opportunity to snatch the project because it’s a sister company to 20th Century.
The true question is will America get Brand’s humor? Sure, he’ll have a writing team beside him, but some lines may be out of place or dull for American viewers. Ultimately, the show could leave people scratching their heads and not understand the jokes, but sometimes that works as well. Think about “Community” or “The League” that leaves you wonder “what the heck just happened?”
A new cartoon that stands out may draw in viewers who are hesitant to the genre. Wouldn’t hurt if Brand got wife Katy Perry in on the project as a guest star as well.
