H. Jon Benjamin is the star of two animated comedies: he voices jerkish secret agent Sterling Archer in FX's Archer, and he plays restaurant owner Bob Belcher in FOX's Bob's Burgers. But for Archer's fourth season, he'll be playing both characters -- at once.
That's right -- it was announced Monday that an Archer/Bob's Burger's crossover is headed down the line for the former's upcoming fourth season. In an episode that will reportedly be similar to the Bourne Identity, Archer will find himself an amnesiac working at a burger store. "It starts off with Archer as Bob, making hamburgers, but he doesn't know that he's Archer," Benjamin told Entertainment Weekly. "He's at the restaurant and these, like, I think Russian thugs come in, and Bob dispatches them expertly. And then he's like, What just happened? How did I do that? So he has to try to figure out why he's so good at killing people."
The episode will give viewers a chance to see Bob and his wife Linda animated in Archer's distinctly more realistic style -- though Benjamin promises they'll still be recognizable. Due to budget restrictions, Bob's three children won't be a part of the episode, meaning that Eugene Mirman and Kristen Schaal appearing on Archer has to stay on our bucket lists.
The crossover was apparently the brainchild of Archer creator Adam Reed. "[Adam] really likes Bob’s Burgers,” Benjamin shared. "It was [his] idea." Bob's Burgers creator Loren Bouchard signed off on the idea but didn't participate in the creation of the episode.
The episode will be "bizarre," according to Benjamin. It is a little weird, because you have to be a fan of both to understand it. But you don’t have to know about Bob’s Burgers to enjoy it.”
Archer's fourth season will premiere early next year on FX.
