“Bob and (his producing partner) Jack (Rapke) are a rare breed, as gifted and accomplished creatively as they are in production,” said Fox TV Studios president David Madden. "We are excited and determined to make them as much of a dynamic brand in television as they are in film."
Zemeckis, who also directed the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Cast Away, will return to theaters later this year with "Flight," a film staring Denzel Washington about the investigation into a pilot's emergency landing, which saves everyone on board, but leads to the discovery that he had alcohol in his system during the flight.
Fox TV Studios has produced shows such as Burn Notice, White Collar, The Killing and The Glades.
At this time, it is unknown what the series will be about or when it will start production. Zemeckis and his partners also serve as producers on the Showtime series The Borgias.
It's too early to rush to judgment on this news, as it could produce something epic or it could bomb. Given Zemeckis' track record, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt though -- especially if Tom Hanks, who knows a thing or two about producing for television, is involved.
