Nucky Thompson will enter into season 3 of Boardwalk Empire a changed man. After all, the second season finale of the series featured the show's most shocking move yet: Thompson shot and killed Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt), his once-protege who had betrayed him. Darmody had accepted his fate, and even talked Nucky through it, but the act was still a major one for Nucky's character. And, according to most of the promotional material for the show's third season, it's going to be the act that really defines the direction of the new season.
Take, for instance, the new promotional poster, which was released on Tuesday. It shows Nucky standing over Jimmy's body, gun still in hand. "You can't be half a gangster," is the tagline, echoing words that Jimmy once spoke to Nucky, back in the show's very first episode. It's clear that the spectre of Jimmy will linger over the entire season. Don't believe me? Just take a look at this promotional trailer from a few weeks ago.
Aesthetically, this poster is the show's simplest yet. It's far away from the many frantic lights of the Atlantic City horizon from the first season, and it's far less crowded than the let's-fit-everyone-in second season poster. It's just a low-key image of Nucky standing over Jimmy's body in the rain, slightly stylized. The fact that the Boardwalk Empire title isn't on the poster means that this image isn't the season's confirmed key art (i.e. what will be the DVD cover), but I'd certainly like it to be.
What do you think? Is this image too simple for your tastes, or do you think it's just right?
Boardwalk Empire will kick off its third season with the premiere episode, "Resolution," Sunday, September 16 on HBO.
