Marion Barry, the former Wasington D.C. mayor, is to be the subject of a biopic from director Spike Lee and writer John Ridley, that will be shown by HBO.
Eddie Murphy is due to star as Barry, with the project currently in pre-development.
Ridley is currently writing the script which will be based on several pieces of source material that include the 1994 book Dream City, written by Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood, both D.C. journalists who will work on the show as consultants.
Murphy and Lee will also executive produce the piece.
HBO previously attempted to develop a Marion Berry biopic a decade ago, which had Jamie Foxx attached to star and Chris Rock to executive produce, however the project ultimately stalled.
Marion Barry is currently a member of the Counicl of the District of Columbia and served two terms as a mayor of D.C., first from 1979-91 and then from 1995--99. These were intermitted with a six month stint in federal prison after he was arrested on drug charges that stemmed from a video of him smoking crack cocaine.
Lee and Ridley are also currently developing a movie about the L.A riots.
