Rarely does singer Rihanna take the time to speak about her private life. However, on Oprah's Next Chapter nothing is off limits. The "We Found Love" singer sat down with Oprah at her home, talking about her success and the darker moments in her life.
One of the most devastating days in Rihanna's life occurred on the way to the Grammy Awards in 2008 when her boyfriend at the time, Chris Brown, assualted her. The pair never made it to the party and Brown was arrested for assault. Though the event caused public backlash for Brown, Rihanna has a more sensitive view on the subject.
While sobbing she told Oprah that night changed her life forever. "I lost my best friend. Everything I knew switched - switched in a night - and I couldn’t control that, so I had to deal with that, and that’s not easy for me to understand.”
She went on to explain that it was even more difficult to deal with in the public eye. “It was hard for me to even pay attention to my mind and figure things out because now it became a circus and I felt protective. I felt like, the only person they hate right now is him."
Many emotions went through her that night that she still deals with today. "It was a weird, confusing space to be in because as angry as I was —angry, hurt and betrayed — I felt like he made that mistake because he needed help and who's going to help him?" she said. "[I thought], everybody's going to say he's a monster ... and I was more concerned about him."
