UK production company Left Bank Pictures has been acquired by Sony Pictures Television, the latest attempt by the SPT to gain a stronger foothold in the international television market. Left Bank is the latest addition to the SPT U.K. properties, which includes Gogglebox Entertainment, Victory Television and Silver River. Sony reached a deal for a majority stake in Left Bank, handling distribution of its television content as well as first-look distribution on feature films produced by the company.
The U.K.-based production company is headed by Andy Harries and Marigo Kehoe, and is one of the country's leading producers of television drama and features including the acclaimed HBO/Cinemax action series "Strike Back." The company is also producing a Nelson Mandela biopic under the working title "Madiba."
Film credits of Left Bank include "The Lady," the Luc Besson-helmed biography of Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi starring Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis.
Harries stated: "This marks the start of a new phase of ambitious quality drama from us for the international market place. "
Harries and Kehoe will report to SPT's Andrea Wong, the former chief exec and prexy of Lifetime, who joined SPT in September as prexy of international production, based in London.
Wong told Variety, "Powered by the outstanding creative talent of Andy, Marigo and their team, Left Bank is justifiably admired in the U.K. and internationally, making it the perfect complement to our diverse U.K. portfolio."
