The ABC gods have axed Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The Word came out today that the long running show, 9 seasons, would end. The show has been on of the networks strongest. It had a big heart helping families rebuild homes. Sometimes they were unsafe or didn’t meet the needs of their children. I remember one famous instance of a house that was made over to be compatible with a child who had extreme allergies.
The show was not controversy free. One email from 2006 published by the Smoking Gun showed a casting search for some interesting cases. A few of the participating families have had their homes foreclosed, although the show claims that this has nothing to do with them. There is at least one lawsuit currently being decided in court.
What most of us have forgotten is the legacy of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. It is a spin-off of Extreme Makeover which was focused on an individuals looks. In this format individuals would be chosen to get new clothes, makeup, and sometimes plastic surgery. The original show didn’t last long and the title is now the vestigial tail to the Home Edition title. A new edition of Extreme Makeover is set to debut. It is subtitled Weight Lost Edition.
The last episode of Home Edition will air on January 13th. This will mark the 200th episode of the show. Extreme Makeover will be helping seven families in Joplin, Missouri. If you are a fan of the show don’t worry, it will be continuing in the form of specials. No air dates have been announced yet.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition airs Friday at 8 pm on ABC. Will you be watching until the very end next year? What is your favorite story that has been featured on the show?
