It was recently announced that NBC's long-running sitcom The Office would be ending with its upcoming ninth season. The series had been on the decline in terms of viewership and quality since the departure of star Steve Carell back at the end of the show's seventh season, and co-creator Greg Daniels announced his intentions to end the series on a high note with a no-holds-barred ninth year. And, if the promotional poster for season 9 is telling the truth, it will indeed be an epic year.
The poster is a wide shot of a chessboard, featuring many of the characters engaging in violent antics while dressed as chess pieces. Dwight (Rainn Wilson) holds Andy (Ed Helms) in a chokehold while angrily swinging a sword, while Erin (Ellie Kemper) tries to stop him.
Darryl (Craig Robinson) wears the king's crown and wields a glass of wine, while wine has certainly gotten the better of Meredith (Kate Flannery), who is passed out on the floor behind her.
Jim (John Krasinski) protectively holds Pam (Jenna Fischer) over to the side, while Ryan (B.J. Novak), dressed as a bishop, receives a loving look from Kelly (Mindy Kaling), who is wrapped tightly around his arm. In the background, Phyllis (Phyllis Smith) puts her foot down on Gabe (Zach Lewis), while Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) and Oscar (Oscar Nunez) look on exasperatedly, as does Angela (Angela Kinsey), but when has that ever changed? Stanley (Leslie David Baker) just isn't paying attention (doing a puzzle), while Toby (Paul Lieberstein) stares way off into the distance, awkwardly. Oh, and Creed? Creed's just standing there, looking crazy.
What do you think of the new poster? I rather like its epic vibe, which promises a season that might be worth tuning in to watch. Do you agree?
The Office's ninth and final season will premiere September 20 on NBC.
