MTV’s highest-rated series ever will end after its upcoming season.
“Jersey Shore” will end after its upcoming sixth season, which premieres Oct. 4. Production is already completed. There had been speculation the network would keep the show going with a new cast.
A retrospective special entitled “Gym, Tan, Look Back,” will debut Sept. 6 before that night’s MTV Video Music Awards, which the cast will also attend to promote the show.
The show, which debuted in December 2009, followed young Garden State residents’ alcohol-fueled antics and made stars of the 20-somethings, particularly of Nicole Elizabeth “Snooki” Polizzi. Most seasons were filmed in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, though the second season traveled to Miami Beach and the cast went to Italy in the fourth season.
Spinoff “Snooki & J-Woww” has been renewed. Though it debuted with 2.4 million viewers and a 1.1 rating in adults 18-49 in June, it did not approach the numbers of “Jersey Shore,” which peaked in late 2011 with close to nine million viewers and MTV’s best returns with adults 18-49. The show also spawned spinoff “The Pauly D Project.”
The most recent season had 7.6 million viewers, which still topped everything else airing on the network.
