There isn't anyone else quite like Shelley Long. And for Jay, Ed Oneil's character on the smash hit 'Modern Family,' there isn't anyone else quite like his ex-wife, Dede Pritchett (Long).
Fans of the awkward tension between Long's Dede and Oneil's Jay will not be disappointed in the coming season, as TVGuide.com has exclusively reported that Long will reprise her much-touted role in the coming episodes. "We have a very funny story for her," Exec Producer Steve Levitan remarked, although he remained tight-lipped on any details surrounding Dede's return. Given that Dede was not the biggest supporter of Jay & Gloria's union, the fact that Gloria is now pregnant with Jay's child should ensure that sparks will fly when Dede reemerges.
Known globally as the lovable Diane Chambers on 'Cheers,' one of the biggest shows of all time, Long was on top of the Hollywood television scene for a period. Of late, her various guest appearances have all been memorable, with perhaps none more uproarious than her turn on 'Modern Family.'
As the mother of Claire (Julie Bowen, with whom Long co-starred for some guest appearances on 'Boston Legal') and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), Long's Dede will certainly share some heartfelt screen moments along with the tense and rageful. But as for poor Jay, it seems his troubles won't be calming to a lull anytime soon.
'Modern Family' returns Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 9/8c on ABC.
