A star of “Mercy” will star in a new Netflix series from the “Weeds” creator.
Taylor Schilling is on board in the lead role of “Orange is the New Black,” a 13-episode project from Lionsgate TV based on Piper Kerman’s book.
The hour-long dramedy is about an engaged Brooklyn resident who gets arrested based on a decade-old relationship with a drug runner. She receives a multi-year detention in a federal penitentiary. The character immerses herself in women’s prison culture. She finds acceptance, tears, laughter and love in a group of inmates .
A number of actresses were reportedly interested in the strong female role.
Schilling appeared in the 2011 adaptation of Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged.” She also appeared opposite Zac Efron in “The Lucky One,” which grossed $60 million in the U.S. box office. She also starred in NBC’s hospital drama “Mercy” from 2009-2010.
“Orange is the New Black” is the latest original series from Netflix. Media Rights Capital produced the political thriller “House of Cards” from David Fincher and Kevin Spacey, and cult comedy “Arrested Development” is also being revived.
Showtime hit “Weeds” will end after its eighth season.
Schilling is repped by Gersh and 3 Arts, and just finished a feature “Stay.”
