The season premiere of Fox hit "New Girl" is just around the corner, and Vulture had a chance to visit the set as the cast and crew brought the weirdness back.
The second season premiere will revolve around the roommates finding themselves in new beginnings: Jess is unemployed, Nick is newly single after abandoning plans to move in with his old flame ("Always Sunny In Philadelphia"'s Mary Elizabeth Ellis), and Schmidt's Little Schmidt has finally healed from its traumatic injury. Penis cast now removed, "Relaunch" finds the self-obsessed Schmidt eager to rebrand himself.
Overall, the second season is primed to continue its theater of the odd. “That’s what our showrunners tell me: Weirder and weirder,” Jack Johnson (Nick) says, pointing to an upcoming episode in which Nick meets his future self. Even Winston, the former European basketball star and most normal member of the group, appears to be due for a shake up. Lamorne Morris says he’s hoping to discover his character's twisted inner thoughts and hankerings, the way Schmidt likes to disrobe, for example. “I do have rippling six pack abs now,” Morris says. “I wouldn’t mind showing off my goods. I’m doing kegels as you and I are talking.”
Back on the set for the first time in months, the cast found it difficult getting used to the "forever twilight" schedule that comes with shooting television. Johnson says: “We shoot on a stage so it feels like no time has passed. It’s like a casino or a supermarket, how there are no clocks or windows, and you enter weirdo world. And the weirdest thing is you come in at 7 a.m., before you know it, you’re leaving and it’s dark out again, and you’re like, ‘I’m having a nervous breakdown and everyone just keeps putting makeup on my face.’”
The second season of "New Girl" premieres September 25th on Fox.
