Alfre Woodard is quite the busy woman this year. The veteran actress just came off a recurring stint on HBO's True Blood, in which she reprised her Emmy-nominated role of Ruby Jean Reynolds, and is set to star alongside Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rashad in the Lifetime network's upcoming remake of the film Steel Magnolias. Now, EW.com is reporting that Woodard is set to make a trip to ABC medical drama Private Practice.
Woodard will portray the mother of series regular Dr. Sam Bennett (Taye Diggs). Fans will recall that last season featured the reunion of Sam and his estranged mentally ill sister Corinne, as played by "The Princess and the Frog" and "Dreamgirls" star Anika Noni Rose. While Sam ultimately did what he believed to be the right thing in the stressful situation that followed, it certainly wasn't a "happy" ending for either Bennett.
Details about why exactly Sam's mom comes to town, or what exactly she'll be doing there, are still currently being kept under wraps. Although it would certainly be a logical development if her arrival is brought on by a desire to make peace with the daughter she long thought was lost. Or maybe Sam and Addison will finally tie the knot this year, and the wedding is what brings the matriarch out of the woodwork? One can only guess at this point.
Is Alfre Woodard the right choice to play Mrs. Bennett?
