We're just a few weeks out from the premiere of the fifth and final season of FOX's sci-fi series Fringe. As you no doubt know by now, the show's fifth season will skip forward in time to 2036, a dystopian future ruled by the time traveling Observers, who took over the earth after devastating it in the future. As shown in the season 4 episode "Letters of Transit," Walter (John Noble), Peter (Joshua Jackson), and Astrid (Jasika Nicole) were safely freed from the amber that preserved them for twenty years by Peter and Olivia's daughter, Etta (Georgina Haig).
Season 5 will undoubtedly be about the Fringe team becoming a resistance movement against the Observers, but there's one thing they need before they can start planning the coup -- to find Olivia (Anna Torv). She was mysteriously missing from the group when they were found in amber, though her location remains a mystery. In a press release for the season premiere, "Transilience Thought-Unifier Model-11," it appears that the team will put all their efforts into searching for her.
"The fifth and final season picks up from the ominous events of last season’s 'Letters of Transit' episode, in which the year is 2036 and the overpowering Observers rule," the press release reads. "The Fringe team – preserved in amber for 20 years – is now a rebel resistance team fighting for freedom. Peter, reunited with his now adult daughter, Etta, sets out to find out what happened to his wife and Etta’s mom – Olivia – as they start their mission to save the world from the Observers."
There's sort of a trend with Fringe, in that it tends to kick off its seasons with one of the main trio missing. Seasons 2 and 3 started off with Olivia nowhere to be found, while season 4 focused extensively on the missing Peter. It looks like we're back to issuing an amber alert for Olivia (I seriously could not resist) in season 5, though I fully expect her to be back in action by the end of the episode.
The press release also confirms what most of us suspected: despite her presumed importance in season 5, Georgina Haig will not be promoted to the main cast. Instead, Haig continues to be credited as a member of the guest cast. Whether or not that has any bearing on the length of tenure on the show remains to be seen, but I wouldn't be too worried.
Fringe season 5 will premiere with the episode "Transilience Thought Unifier Model-11" Friday, September 28 on FOX.
