FOX's critically acclaimed sci-fi drama Fringe will be returning for its fifth and final season in just two weeks, and as such, we're starting to get more and more looks into the premiere episode, "Transilience Thought Unifier Model-11." No, we still haven't figured out what that title means, either.
The premiere episode will take us back to 2036, a setting we first visited in the season 4 episode "Letters of Transit." In that episode, it was revealed that the future was a very dark place, completely controlled by a totalitarian regime of the Observers, future inhabitants of earth who have the ability to travel in time and read minds (hey, maybe that's what the title refers to). In "Letters of Transit," Etta (Georgina Haig), managed to help the Fringe team escape from the amber that they had been trapped in. The only person she wasn't able to free? Her mother, Olivia (Anna Torv), who was mysteriously missing. The season 5 premiere will show the group searching for Olivia, according to the episode's official synopsis:
"The Fringe team – preserved in amber for 20 years – is now a rebel resistance team fighting for freedom. Peter, reunited with his now adult daughter, Etta, sets out to find out what happened to his wife and Etta’s mom – Olivia – as they start their mission to save the world from the Observers."
Some pretty cool new promotional photos from the episode have been released, which feature Walter (John Noble), Astrid (Jasika Nicole), Peter (Joshua Jackson), and Etta searching for -- and finding -- the amberized Olivia. Much as Walter was transported, they cut out the block of amber around her and put her in the back of a van for transporting. But will they be able to rescue Olivia without being seen by the watchful eye of the Observers? I'm paranoid already.
Check out the promo photos below, and tune in for Fringe season 5 when it premieres Friday, September 28 at 9/8c on FOX.
