Tom Waits has a voice that any music fan can pick out. It’s gritty, it’s deep, it’s unlike anyone else. This famous voice has more plans than just recording a new music, Waits is set to lend his voice to Fox’s hit animation The Simpsons.
The singer will play himself in an episode airing in December. In the episode people are making active preparations for potential global disaster during a survivalism movement. Homer meets a group of committed “preppers” through Waits. Executive producer Al Jean told TVLine that the writers did a lot of research before creating the storyline.
"We did a lot of research into the 'prepper' phenomenon, where people are convinced that some horrible catastrophe – like an electromagnetic pulse – is going to occur, and that people will have to survive without the grid.”
Though Waits is not going to sing on the episode, Jean says that fans will immediately be able to identify his character. Much like Waits, Justin Bieber is also a highly anticipated guest star who will also play himself. "He tries to get into a talent show that Bart is playing piano in and they won't admit him," Jean told Entertainment Weekly. "Draw your own conclusions."
Waits and Bieber join the growing list of guest stars as Beneditch Cumberbatch, Steve Carell, Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen also are confirmed for the season.
