'Smash' is coming back for another season and they've lured feature film star Jesse L. Martin to beef up a cast that already includes Hollywood royalty Anjelica Houston.
Martin will portray Artistic Director Scott Welker, a recurring character who has preexisting ties to other characters and may become involved with Julia (Debra Messing). Martin is best known for his work on 'Law & Order' but television fans would recognize him more recently as Philip Maidstone on 'The Philanthropist.' On the big screen, Martin has racked up an impressive number of roles over the past few years in films like 'Buffalo Bushido' and 'Puncture.'
The return to NBC isn't the only homecoming involved with Martin taking the role of Scott Welker; he is a former Broadway star and assuming the role of an artistic director in the hectic show business world of 'Smash' will probably stir up memories of his days on stage.
This is the latest name to be touted as a guest star for 'Smash's upcoming season, following the news that Jennifer Hudson ('Sex & the City 2') and Daniel Sunjata ('Rescue Me') would be appearing as well. Rumours swirled that Sunjata would be brought in as a romantic interest for Messing's Julia, however Martin will bring even more tall, dark & handsome to the 'Smash' set--could be Julia's love-live is going to get a lot more complex in the coming season.
Capping off a list of 'Smash' guests is Messing's co-star from 'Will & Grace,' Sean Hayes, who is fresh off the heels of a colossal flop at the box office with the critically-panned 'The Three Stooges.' Here's hoping the inclusion of a multi-talented actor like Martin can balance out the inclusion of Hayes and help make a 'Smash' this coming season.
