NBC wants Smash to be a big success. It has marketed the show hard and is adding talent to try to solidify the cast heading into its second season.
A few days ago the show added Jesse L. Martin, a veteran of Broadway and Law & Order. Today comes the news that Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky is coming in as well.
Blonsky, who was discovered while working at an ice cream shop, has signed on for a recurring role.
Hairspray producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan also work as producers on Smash.
It is unknown who Blonsky will be playing, but she will not be playing herself. The actress was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work on Hairspray.
Blonsky joins Jennifer Hudson (fiancée of WWE star David Otunga), Sean Hayes and Jeremy Jordan as season two additions.
She joins season two additions Jeremy Jordan, Jennifer Hudson and Sean Hayes, among others, in Smash's rapidly growing cast.
Blonsky also appeared on ABC Family's Huge.
Smash returns midseason on NBC.
Does this casting make you more interested in watching Smash? Are you already a fan of the series? Can Smash be NBC's Glee? I've seen an episode before and it didn't wow me, but I'm not part of the target audience.
