Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

This week, TVRage will be taking you through the categories of the upcoming 64th Primetime Emmy Awards and giving you our picks on who we think should -- and will -- win. We kicked off our predictions on Saturday with the category Outstanding Miniseries or TV Movie, and yesterday gave our picks for the Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie. Now, we're mixing it up a little, giving you our thoughts on the Oustanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Category.

The nominees are:

  • Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy on Modern Family (Episode: "Lifetime Supply") (ABC)
  • Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett on Modern Family (Episode: "Leap Day") (ABC)
  • Max Greenfield as Schmidt on New Girl (Episode: "Control") (FOX)
  • Bill Hader as Various Characters on Saturday Night Live (Episode: "Host: Katy Perry") (NBC)
  • Ed O'Neill as Jay Pritchett on Modern Family (Episode: "Baby on Board") (ABC)
  • Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker on Modern Family (Episode: "Treehouse") (ABC)

I really don't care how great of a comedy series Modern Family is; there is absolutely no reason why four of the six nominees in this category should go to cast members of that show. Has no one informed the Emmys that there are more comedies on television than the ones on ABC, correct? Neil Patrick Harris is still on How I Met Your Mother, right? Did Emmy voters not see Rob McElhenney gain 50 pounds for his role on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and expand it into more than just one sight gag?

But I digress. What he have is a category populated by four cast members from the same show, who really all have equal choices of winning. Ty Burrell took home the statuette last year, and Eric Stonestreet did the year before. Could it be time for Ed O'Neill or Jesse Tyler Ferguson? There's really no way of knowing, though it's pretty darn certain that one of them will nab it.

If not, though, I'd really love for Bill Hader to win. Sure, Saturday Night Live is extremely hit-and-miss, but Hader's the most consistently funny part of the series. No television character has had me laughing with tears in my eyes like his Weekend Update recurring character, Stefon. Hader's consistently hilarious, and an Emmy for his work is unlikely, but wouldn't be unjustified.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live

WHO WILL WIN: Anyone from Modern Family

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sunday night on ABC. Stay tuned into TVRage for more Emmy predictions.

Four of the six (!?) - that's a bit obvious (with the bribes!), and crude, and crass.
