Returning to the world of period gangster drama that made him famous as Sonny Corleone in 1972's The Godfather, James Caan will be joining the cast for the second season of Starz's Magic City in a major recurring role.
Set in Miami in 1959, Magic City follows the story of Miramar Playa hotel owner Ike Evans, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. To ensure the success of his glamorous establishment, Ike is forced to make an ill-fated business deal with Miami mob boss Ben "The Butcher" Diamond (Danny Huston) and ends up regretting it. In his biggest television commitment since NBC's Las Vegas, Caan will portray Sy Berman, head of the Chicago mob and Diamond's boss.
As a father figure to the young con, Sy nurtured Ben's criminal talents and helped him become the feared "Butcher" of Miami. However, what Diamond doesn't know is that Berman has a secret connection to his wife Lily, played by Jessica Marais. It was only natural for Caan to appear in the series, as it was heavily influenced by The Godfather.
Another addition to the cast is NYPD Blue's Esai Morales in a recurring role as Carlos Ruiz, a former Cuban rebel who thought of Fidel Castro as a brother when they fought together, but now works to free his homeland from Castro's grip.
In preparation for the show's 2013 return, Season 2 of Magic City will start shooting in Miami this week.
I'm surprised this show flew under my radar, although we don't get Starz in Canada as far as I know. Have you seen it? What do you think of it?
