The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards air TONIGHT on ABC, and we here at TVRage are wrapping up our weeklong event of bringing you our Emmy predictions and thoughts. We've only got three categories left, so stay tuned for the next few hours to hear our thoughts on who deserves to win the Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Drama series. You can check out all of our predictions here. In the meantime, here's our final acting award prediction, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Here are the nominees:
- Zooey Deschanel as Jessica Day on New Girl (Episode: "Bad in Bed") (FOX)
- Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath on Girls (Episode: "She Did") (HBO)
- Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton on Nurse Jackie (Episode: "Disneyland Sucks") (Showtime)
- Tina Fey as Liz Lemon on 30 Rock (Episode: "The Tuxedo Begins") (NBC)
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Selina Meyer on Veep (Episode: "Tears") (HBO)
- Melissa McCarthy as Molly Flynn on Mike & Molly (Episode: "The Dress") (CBS)
- Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation (Episode: "Win, Lose, or Draw") (NBC)
This category is interesting because it boasts seven nominees, as opposed to the usual six, due to a tie in the nomination process. In a category that really could have gone a number of ways before, now it's really difficult to predict.
Out of the seven, four (Falco, Fey, Louis-Dreyfus, and McCarthy) have won the award in the past ten years. McCarthy took home the award last year, making her the de facto frontrunner, but seeing how this category hasn't had a repeat winner in over ten years, don't even think about declaring her the winner yet.
There are three new shows in this category, which throws a real wrench into prediction-making. Louis-Dreyfus was acclaimed for her role as Vice President Selina Meyer in HBO's politicomedy Veep, while Lena Dunham is an indie favorite for her new HBO series Girls. Zooey Deschanel is the fresh-faced, rather ubiquitous lead of FOX's New Girl, and of the three, I'd guess that her chances are best.
A win for either Falco and Fey, who both excellently front declining TV shows, just isn't likely.
No, the actress who deserves to win here is Amy Poehler, who is consistently hilarious as city government member Leslie Knope in NBC's Parks & Recreation. She's the standout of a great comedic cast, and for her to have been nominated and lose twice before is a tragedy. She definitely deserves this win, but it's by no means likely that she'll get it. In fact, no one in this category is anything close to a lock.
WHO SHOULD WIN: Amy Poehler, Parks & Recreation
WHO WILL WIN: Zooey Deschanel, New Girl
It's a bit of a wild card category, so what do you think? Am I completely off-base? Will someone else snag the award tonight? Let me know in the comments section below.
