Here we are: TVRage's final two predictions for tonight's 64th Primetime Emmy Awards. If you're looking to check out the rest of our predictions, you can find them here. In the meantime, let's get right down to it, shall we? This article is for our predictions of Outstanding Comedy Series, so here are the nominees:
- 30 Rock (NBC)
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
- Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
- Girls (HBO)
- Modern Family (ABC)
- Veep (HBO)
Let's go ahead and write off Curb Your Enthusiasm and 30 Rock; both had greater chances of winning in previous years, but things aren't looking good for them here.
HBO's two other contenders, Veep and Girls, are the funniest in the category, but are so small that they really don't stand much of a chance unless Emmy voters suddenly decide to skew really indie. Of the two, Veep has the stronger chance, because it's aimed at a slightly older demographic and is, in general, funnier. It probably deserves to win more than any other show in the category (though I wouldn't be too disappointed if Girls did), but its chances are low, especially when you look at the other contenders.
Broad comedies Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory are really the favorites here. Modern Family has won for the past two years in this category, and really, it's the show to beat. Having said that, there's a chance that The Big Bang Theory -- which has received plenty of love from Emmy voters in the acting categories -- might take home the prize for the first time. That could very easily happen, but for now, it's best to keep our bets on the seemingly unstoppable juggernaut that is modern family.
But just think about it -- next year, it's incredibly possible that Arrested Development will be back in the running for Outstanding Comedy Series! If that doesn't warm your heart, regardless of tonight'soutcome, I don't know what will.
WHO SHOULD WIN: Veep
WHO WILL WIN: Modern Family
