Two of my least favorite television genres are adding to their ranks, as MTV2 moves ahead with a new reality competition series while FOX plans a new daytime talk show.
Following a successful six-week test run in several markets including New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dallas, Phoenix, and Minneapolis, FOX has picked up Bethenny, a new daytime talk show hosted by Bethenny Frankel. If you're like me and have never heard of this person, apparently she is an author, entrepreneur, natural foods chef, and American television personality who was the focus of Bravo reality series Bethenny Getting Married? and Bethenny Ever After. She has also appeared on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart and The Real Housewives Of New York City, and is the founder of Skinnygirl Cocktails.
Produced by Ellen Degeneres' A Very Good Production, Bethenny will launch nationwide on an unspecified date in 2013, either in January to keep the momentum rolling or next fall. Originally eyed for a fall 2012 debut, the show failed to land clearances in a crowded market and was presumed dead until FOX gave it a second chance on six of its stations over the summer. After being sold to FOX, Bethenny will be offered to the remaining markets for national syndication next year.
From Fear Factor executive producer David A. Hurwitz comes Numbnuts, described as a "high-octane, hilarious, adrenaline-fueled stunt competition game-show series." Hosted by Jeff Dye of NBC's Last Comic Standing, Numbnuts will feature the stunt mishaps of internet contestants. Three web-celebrity stunt masters named Crazy Mike, The Horse, and Victor Lopez will then lead their teams into battle to determine who can better perform beefed-up versions of the stunts. Sounds fascinating if you were a fan of Jackass. Rupert Thompson, who has also worked on Fear Factor, will serve as director. Premiering on MTV's sister network MTV2 this Friday at 10:00 pm, the show will be preceded by the seventh season premiere of the Bellator Fighting Championships.
Maybe I'm just sadistic, but I'd like to see a crossover between these two projects. Will you be watching?
