Disney is telling the jokes, but Demi Lovato isn’t laughing.
The former Disney star is never afraid to speak her mind on Twitter, especially when she sees something offensive. The teen found herself in rehab last year to deal with depression and bulimia, so when she saw a recent episode of Disney‘s “Shake It Up” she was disgusted that the show poked fun at having an eating disorder. Just what did the character say? “I could eat you up, well, if I ate.”
“I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress’ from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about that very disease. #nice,” Lovato tweeted. “And is it just me or are the actress’ [on Disney Channel] getting THINNER AND THINNER…. I miss the days of RAVEN, and LIZZIE MCGUIRE.” She concluded with, ”Dear Disney Channel, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT.”
Disney immediately responded to the tweets publicly over the social network. “@ddlovato – we hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them.” The episode was removed from the station, and it’s likely the writers will get a firm warning to watch the script.
Lovato starred in “Sonny With a Chance” before leaving the franchise to focus on her health and music career. The show got a total revamp when Lovato left, and is now known as “So Random!”
Do you think Lovato is overreacting or was the joke tasteless?
