A spinoff of TNT’s “The Closer” will return next summer.
The network has renewed “Major Crimes” for its second season.
The Mary McDonnell drama will start a 15-episode second season in the summer of 2013.
“Major Crimes” is cable’s top new series so far in 2012. It debuted to 7.2 million viewers in August. It is also one of the top three new dramas on cable in adults 18-49 (with 1.6 million) and 25-54 year olds (2.12 million viewers).
"Week after week, 'Major Crimes' has drawn millions of fans with its combination of sharp writing and engaging characters brought to life by what can only be described as one of the best acting ensembles on television,” Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, told The Hollywood Reporter. “We look forward to another season of this remarkable new drama."
On “Major Crimes,” Captain Raydor(played by Mary McDonnell) takes over the Los Angeles Police Department after Chief Johnson’s (Kyra Sedgwick’s character on “The Closer”) departure.
With its second season, “Major Crimes” joins other returning shows “Dallas,” “Falling Skies” and Perception.”
McDonnell is prominent for her roles in “Dances With Wolves,” “Independence Day” and “Donnie Darko.”
Season one of “Major Crimes” ends in mid-October. It is produced by Shepherd/Robin Co. with Warner Bros. TV. James Duff, Greer Shephard, Michael M. Robin and Rick Wallace are the show’s executive producers.
