Returning to the role that began her ascent to Bieberdom, Selena Gomez is set to participate in the Disney Channel's Wizards Of Waverly Place reunion special next year.
In addition to the executive producer credit that her fame has earned, Gomez will reprise her role as Alex Russo, the trouble-making middle child and only daughter of Jerry and Theresa Russo. David DeLuise and Maria Canals-Barrera will once again play her parents, with Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, and Gregg Sulkin stepping back into their original roles as well.
Set to premiere in early 2013, the television special takes the Russo family and friends to Tuscany, Italy, to meet their long lost relatives. However, when Alex tries to prove she’s more than a seemingly carefree young wizard, she accidentally casts a spell that creates a Good Alex and an Evil Alex. When another wizard recruits Evil Alex in an ominous plan to take over the world, Good Alex must find a way to save her family and humankind, leading to a climactic showdown between the two versions of herself on top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Joining Gomez as executive producers, original series scribes Vince Cheung and Ben Montanio will also co-write the reunion special with Dan Berendsen (Baby Daddy).
Created by Todd J. Greenwald (Hannah Montana), Wizards Of Waverly Place won its third Emmy for best children’s program at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier this month. The show's other win for the series came in 2009, while the TV movie took home a trophy in 2010.
Has the show even been off the air long enough for viewers to feel nostalgic about this reunion?
