Doctor Who Christmas Special Sneak Peek (Re-)Reveals New Companion

On Saturday, Doctor Who bid goodbye to longtime companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill). Their final episode, "The Angels Take Manhattan," also served as the midseries finale of the show's seventh series (read my review of the episode here). Doctor Who will return later this year for the show's annual Christmas special before returning for new episodes in early 2013.

The Christmas special will be a bit of a mini-reboot for the series, as it will see the Doctor take on a new companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. And here's where things get interesting.

You see, we've already met Jenna-Louise Coleman in series 7, in the opening episode "Asylum of the Daleks." She played quirky hacker Oswin Oswald, who turned out to have been transformed into a Dalek and was killed when the asylum blew up at the end of the episode. It was a startling twist with which to introduce the new companion, and also raised questions of how the hell they would bring her back.

For the Christmas special, tentatively titled "The Snowman," we really don't even know if Coleman will be playing the same character. All we know is that she'll be introduced here and will remain with the Doctor for at least the rest of series 7 (and probably series 8, at least).

Check out a short teaser for the Christmas special below. It only reveals three shots from the episode, but hey, that's better than nothing.

Doctor Who will return Christmas day on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the UK.

Will you be tuning in?
