MTV announced earlier this year that this season of Jersey Shore would be the last. Apparently a lot of the fan base misunderstood, as this premiere plunged nearly 40 percent from the previous season's premiere rating.
The episode still drew a good number, with 4.7 million viewers and a 2.5 rating among adults in the 18-49 demo. Only the NFL topped it on all of cable, but it still marked a 38 percent drop from the last season opener in January. That opener premiered to 7.6 million viewers and a 4.0 rating in the aforementioned demo. And that opener was a drop from the season four opener, which drew a nearly 9 million haul and a 4.3 rating with adults 18-49.
It is still MTV's top-rated series, but I think it is safe to say the magic is gone. Sober Situation and Ronnie in a couple is a recipe for disaster.
Combined with a second episode aired at 11 p.m., 8.7 million total viewers tuned in last night. With encores, the show attracted 11.96 million total viewers.
As a closeted fan of Jersey Shore, the time for ending the show is right. The characters/people are insufferable now that they have become increasingly self-aware and learned the game. Jersey Shore should have done like the Real World and recast every year.
