In preparation for the debut of its midseason thriller The Following, FOX is rolling out some creepy new promotional art exclusively at EW.com. Also available on the show's Facebook page, the posters will begin to appear at Six Flags theme parks next week.
Scheduled to premiere in January, The Following is created, written, and executive produced by Scream mastermind Kevin Williamson. The series stars James Purefoy (Rome) as a notorious serial killer named Joe Carroll who escapes from prison to pick up where he left off when he was captured nine years earlier. Kevin Bacon also stars as former FBI agent Ryan Hardy, an expert on Carroll who was responsible for catching the brilliant psychopath.
Having since withdrawn from the public eye, Hardy is called back to duty as a consultant to work closely with the FBI team assigned to the case. Making the task of bringing Carroll to justice even more difficult, Hardy soon discovers that Carroll was organizing and communicating with a network of serial killers across the country while in prison. As the mastermind of this group, Carroll plans to finish what he started and dreams of writing a novel with Hardy as his protagonist.
In addition to creating the Scream franchise, Williamson has also written several feature films including I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Faculty. For television, he created and wrote Dawson's Creek and The Vampire Diaries.
While I don't care much for Williamson's brand of pseudo-horror, I've been a big fan of Purefoy since he played Mark Antony on HBO's Rome and his criminally underrated turn on the short-lived NBC summer series The Philanthropist. This role sounds perfect for him, as a highly intelligent Hannibal Lecter type of serial killer, and the whole project is reminiscent of FOX's Millennium.
