Classical literature has never been hotter.
Reese Witherspoon will executive produce an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations for The CW. The series, named Expectations, has been given a script order.
It hour-long drama will be set in modern times and focus on a small-town girl who moves to the big city (San Francisco) only to realize it was not all she thought it would be. But then, her luck changes when she receives a small fortune from an anonymous benefactor.
Mills Goodloe, who co-produced Lethal Weapon 4 and is currently adapting Nicholas Sparks' The Best of Me, is attached to write and executive produce alongside Witherspoon.
Dickens' story focuses on Pip, an orphan who meets an escaped convict while visiting the gravesite of his parents and siblings. Pip assists the convict and, down the line, this convict runs into Pip again under different circumstances.
Witherspoon is also producing single mom comedy Wendy & Peter at Fox. She has to eat, you know.
The CW is remake crazy. In addition to Great Expectations, the network is doing a contemporary Alice in Wonderland drama, a Wonder Woman origin story and a Sleepy Hollow reboot.
What show do you think the network is going to remake next?
