Oh how we love New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel, let us count the ways. She’s quirky. She’s stylish. She co-owns one of the best websites on the Internet. She’s connected to her fans. She loves dogs in clothes. She could easily be anyone’s best friend. Her voice is angelic. Her acting is funny, but cute and relatable. Ah yes, and she fights for animal rights.
Deschanel has joined Ryan Gosling, Alicia Silverstone, Kristin Bauer, Ed Begley Jr. and Steve-O in protesting McDonald’s alleged mistreatment of chickens. According to reports McDonald’s uses “battery cages” to store hens that produce their eggs. All actors and TV personalities joined Mercy For Animals to draw attention to the cause.
Gosling and company have written letters to McDonald’s CEO Jim Skinner asking for better treatment of the animals. However, McDonald’s denies any mistreatment and points out that they have severed ties with a supplier who was treating livestock poorly.
Deschanel’s support is not surprising for fans who know how much she loves animals. At least twice a week she asks fans to tweet her photos of their pets for an afternoon pick-me-up. She shares the photos with her followers or post them to her Facebook account. The best ones sometimes find their way to HelloGiggles.com.
When she’s not fighting for animal rights, Deschanel is still celebrating her Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Jess on “New Girl.”
