This issue is dedicated to Mark Sheppard, perhaps the most famous “That Guy”. Joining him are Angel alumni, Keith Szarabajka and Adam Baldwin.
That Guy: Mark Sheppard
Where He’s Been: 24, Battlestar Galactica, Bionic Woman, Burn Notice, Charmed, Chuck, Dollhouse, Dr. Who, Firefly, In Plain Sight, JAG, Leverage, Medium, Monk, NCIS, Supernatural, Warehouse 13, Without a Trace
Trademark: Surly Englishman
Most Memorable Role: In Supernatural as Crowley, first the King of the Crossroads and now the King of Hell. My favorite scene is in Two Minutes to Midnight (Season 5, Episode 21) when Bobby admits he loaned his soul to Crowley but insists they never sealed the deal with a kiss. Crowley then clears his throat and holds up a picture of the two kissing. Bobby exclaims, “Why’d you take a picture?” and Crowley replies calmly, “Why’d you have to use tongue?”
I do not know what it is but we Americans cannot seem to get enough of surly Brits and Mark Sheppard is a perfect example of that. A known scene stealer, it would be difficult to not know who he is, given that he frequently plays the same clever, manipulative, charismatic villain we love.
That Guy: Adam Baldwin
Where He’s Been: Angel, Bones, Castle, Chuck, Day Break, Firefly, The Inside, JAG, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Leverage, NCIS, The X-Files
Trademark: Kind of a D-Bag
Most Memorable Role: In Angel as Marcus Hamilton, who replaced Eve as the new liaison to the Senior Partners. His character had one of the best entrances in Underneath (Season 5, Episode 17) where he tears through Wolfram & Hart like he’s The Terminator to find Eve, who begs Lorne and Harmony to protect her from him. When Hamilton finally catches up with her, he simply hands her some forms to sign, announces to everyone that he is the new liaison, and grins, saying “I’m looking forward to working myself into the mix!”
Despite his surname, Adam is not related to the famous Baldwin brothers. I cannot put my finger on why, exactly, but something tells me this is the type of guy who would tape Larry Lester’s butt cheeks together without a second thought.
That Guy: Keith Szarabajka
Where He’s Been: Angel, Charmed, Cold Case, ER, Numb3rs, Party of Five, Roswell, Sons of Anarchy
Trademark: Raspy Voice
Most Memorable Role: In Angel as Daniel Holtz, a God-fearing, baby-stealing, slayer of vampires (not to be confused with a Buffy-verse Slayer, capital S). Holtz was one of the most sympathetic villains, considering what Angelus and Darla did to his family. In Lullaby (Season 3, Episode 9) it is revealed that the pair not only killed his wife and infant son, but also turned his little girl into a vampire.
Keith Szarabajka, a successful voice actor, has gained notoriety by showcasing his distinctive voice in numerous video games as well as guest starring in several television shows and a handful of movies.
