The economy is tough. Even for TV doctors.
With the series recently celebrating its 100th episode, producer Shonda Rhimes tweeted that ABC's "Private Practice" would be drawing to a close. "I'm sad to say that Private Practice's run will end after episode 613 this season."
The popular medical drama is a spin-off series, built around Kate Walsh's Addison Montgomery leaving "Grey's Anatomy"'s Seattle hospital to start her own life in California. Rhimes continued, "There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line. Creatively, we are all extremely proud of the show and especially proud of this season—which you will all soon discover is a creative renaissance. I can't wait for you to see it."
The ending does not appear to be a happy one, as the showrunner and creator expressed disappointment in her official announcement. "It's heartbreaking to end," Rhimes wrote. "Truly. I feel so lucky to write for these characters and tell these stories and I truly feel this show has taught me so much as a writer. And there's a family here, of crew and cast, people who have bonded over these past five and a half seasons. It's rare for a show to go for more than 100 episodes, and we are incredibly proud to have been such a show. And we're grateful to all of you for spending time with us for an hour every week for the last 6 years. It's meant the world."
Last season featured series co-star Tim Daly leaving the spin-off series. Walsh had noted in previous interviews that this current season would be her own swan song, but she was optimistic that the show could go on without her and left the door open to future guest appearances there or on the series where Addison got her start, "Grey's Anatomy." The actress explained, “That’s Shonda’s decision really. I wouldn’t want to do it all of the time but I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to it either especially if a good storyline came up that needed [Addison]."
Tune in for the 'creative renaissance' when "Private Practice" continues its final season Tuesday nights!
