I am amazed by the Honey Boo Boo phenomenon. I just do not understand why people want to watch this girl and her family. By the same token, I do not really understand the fascination with the Kardashians or any other "reality star," but at least they are usually adults and have decided to make this decision for themselves. I think everyone watches these shows understanding that for the most part there is no real reality being showcased; rather, they are seeing fictional scenarios painted as reality. I think most people understand that...but what about those times where the reality is close to the "reality?"
Alana Thompson, the seven-year-old star of TLC's Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, is not enjoying her time as a pop culture icon. In an interview with HLN's Dr. Drew, she pretended to be asleep, only to "wake up" and reveal that she hates being on TV, because "fans come up to me and I hate it."
Now, no matter what you think of the Thompsons, this still is a little girl. An obnoxious, spoiled little girl, but a little girl nonetheless It seems criminal that children are allowed to be used as pawns by their parents in the attempt to avoid getting real jobs and instead of cash in on the money their children earn for them. I have no idea how aware Honey Boo Boo is of the perception society has of her, but she does not seem to have ever had a normal life where the "Coupon Queen," her mother June, was not pushing her to perform in pageants.
Honey Boo Boo and June recently completed a media tour of Los Angeles, where the duo appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Honey Boo Boo said that Barack Obama was her pick for president during that show and responded to the viral Christopher Walken video where he performed dialog from her show, along with Sam Rockwell and Colin Farrell.
