Degrassi is back with its 12th season and a new recruit of students ready to face teen pregnancy, drug abuse, marriage, homosexuality and any other struggles that come with being the average Canadian teenager. The cast is full of a few fan favorites, such as Claire, Sav and Anya, while one newcomer may just give you the feeling that you’ve seen her before.
Alex Steele joins the cast as Tori Santamaria, and though many assume she’s new to the show the truth is that Alex appeared on the series (back when it was Degrassi: The Next Generation) as Angela Jeremiah. Angela was Joey Jeremiah’s adorable daughter and Craig Manning’s little half-sister. She’s also the real life sister of Cassie Steele, who portrayed Manny Santos until season nine.
In a recent interview with StarPulse, Alex revealed that it was her choice to leave acting for awhile after her time as Angela on the popular franchise. When she decided to return to acting her sister helped her land the role as Tori. "She helped me with my audition. She told me what the directors like to see," Alex said. "She always helps me with my scripts,” Alex shared. Though Cassie’s days on Degrassi are over, she currently stars on the drama The L.A. Complex.
Some think that the transition from Angela to Tori may be difficult, but Alex said that it’s a much different role, so it wasn’t a hard transition at all. "They're totally different. Angela was a happy go lucky girl who was eating and playing with Barbies most of the time and Tori's definitely a much more mature character."
This season plan to see Tori in a main storyline that turns into a vicious love triangle! Degrassi’s latest season airs every Friday at 9/8c on Teen Nick.
