As a result of a family health emergency, Titus Welliver has been forced to disembark TNT's The Last Ship pilot. Replacing him on the post-apocalyptic drama will be Adam Baldwin.
Although the network respectfully did not elaborate, reports indicate that Welliver's wife has been quite ill. Due to the nature of his departure, Welliver may be given another role on The Last Ship if it is picked up to series.
Participating in his first pilot since NBC's action-comedy spy series Chuck, Baldwin will portray Mike Slattery, designated as second in command to Captain Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) onboard the USS Nathan James. Described as a fair man who cares deeply for his family, Slattery clashes with Chandler at times over the best course of action for the ship and its crew.
Based on the popular novel by William Brinkley, The Last Ship centers on the crew of a naval destroyer who are forced to confront their new reality as some of the only survivors after a global catastrophe decimates the Earth's population.
In addition to his role as Colonel John Casey on Chuck, Baldwin has appeared in a variety of television series such as The X-Files, Firefly, Angel, and Day Break. Most recently, he completed a three-episode arc as the new interim captain on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and played another colonel in two episodes of TNT drama Leverage. Baldwin has also been featured in films including Full Metal Jacket, Independence Day, and DC Cab.
Adam Baldwin has made a career out of playing military types and other authority figures, so this seems like pretty natural casting. We here at TVRage wish all the best to Titus Welliver and his family.
