On last night's MTV broadcast of its fading star, Jersey Shore, the series ventured into new territory rarely seen in reality television: reality.
The episode began with the a plea to viewers, asking them to help Seaside Heights, New Jersey - where the show was filmed for the majority of its lifespan. The beach town has been severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
“We are beyond saddened that so many families are now homeless. The boardwalk, the beaches, the rides and so many places that we see every week on TV are now ruined,” said cast member Vinny Guadagnino. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who was affected by this tragedy. We love you, Seaside!”
He asked viewers to donate to relief efforts, with Jersey Shore and MTV specifying that their charity preference was the Red Cross.
Viewers can donate $10 to the cause by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999.

Of all the cast members, Vinny is the closest to an actual human being, so he was the right choice for this message.
“I've never watched Jersey Shore like I am tonight. Mind boggling to think its gone,” he tweeted after the show.
